Drawing on the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection, the Lowe Art Museum’s exhibition—guest curated by Alejandro de la Fuente—presents key Afrocubanista works, including examples by Wifredo Lam, to illuminate the complex social and cultural forces shaping twentieth century Cuban art.
Afrocubanismo was made possible by anonymous donors; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; Maria C. Bechily and Scott Hodes; Christopher Rodriguez of Epic Developments; the Lowe Advisory Council; Beaux Arts Miami; the Cuban Heritage Collection; and Lowe Members. This exhibition was sponsored in part by the State of Florida through the Division of Arts and Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts and with the support of the City of Coral Gables Cultural Arts Division.
