Showcasing over fifty artworks in a wide range of media by contemporary artists of African descent, Young, Gifted, and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art explores the richness and complexity of Black art and life today. The title refers to the 1970 song by Nina Simone, a powerful anthem of pride, possibility, and self-determination during the Black Power era. More than fifty years later, that call to action continues to resonate. In this exhibition, younger-generation voices, in dialogue with established predecessors, explore questions of identity, power, and history, while also pushing the boundaries of artistic practice. Young, Gifted, and Black was organized by Bernard Lumpkin, and co-curated by Antwaun Sargent and Matt Wycoff.
